The D.A.R.K. Brown girl collection and the Chrysalis Program are essentially a love letter to minority girls everywhere.
YOU ARE ENOUGH.
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.
YOU ARE CAPABLE.
YOU ARE BRILLIANT.
YOU ARE STRONG, BUT YOU ARE ALSO GENTLE.
YOU ARE ABOVE A SYSTEMIZED STANDARD OF BEAUTY.
YOU DESERVE LOVE, RESPECT AND ADORATION!
The Chrysalis Program addresses societal blemishes such as:
Chicago Violence | Bullying | Self Hate | Colorism | Childhood Depression | Hair and Body Shaming | Suicidal Youth
The inception of the Chrysalis Program took place at the intersection between wanting to reach the world with a message of love & wholeness and needing to make an immediate change in our own community right here on Chicago's Southside.
The Chrysalis Program is a 501c3 nonprofit that teaches self-confidence, health and nutrition and practical life skills to minority girls age 5-18 through interactive workshops, mentoring and counseling. Utilizing the resources of volunteers and active parents we have created a community of learning, transformation and growth. Chrysalis Program students learn:
Leadership, Nutrition, Fitness, Conflict Resolution, Empathy, Gratitude, Communication Skills, and How to Actively Build Self Confidence
The Chrysalis Program began first as a book series called, The DARK Brown Girl. The series was written to build the confidence of African American girls and women. Emails, messages and letters poured in about girls who didn't love themselves, were being bullied or had attempted suicide due to a severe lack of confidence. The Chrysalis Program was created as a safe place to learn the skill of self-confidence in a fun interactive and safe environment. We soon found the the community needed more than a confidence boost. Issues such as: pediatric asthma and diabetes, violence in the home and in our communities, and childhood trauma needed to be addressed in a comprehensive manner. Our students needed to leave our program not only with better confidence, improved behavior, and higher academic achievements, but with healthier minds and a long-lasting positive lifestyle.
Some Chrysalis students are survivors of a myriad of hardships including but not limited to: severe bullying, abject poverty, domestic violence, abandonment, verbal and emotional abuse and sexual violence. Others participate to sharpen skills, increase self esteem, and to gain social emotional support. There are many benefits of social emotional skills gained by participants of the Chrysalis Program. Our program allows students to:
• Become more self-aware
• Manage themselves more intentionally
• Become socially aware
• Build healthier relationships
• Make better more responsible decisions
The Chrysalis Program offers hope, nutrition, fitness, excitement, fun, sisterhood, comfort, encouragement, affirmation and acceptance to an undeserved population of girls.
In addition to socio-emotional support, The Chrysalis Program offers practical life skills though interactive workshops like: Health and fitness, sewing, cooking, healthy communication, conflict resolution, gratitude, empathy, emotional intelligence, dining and social etiquette, financial literacy, horticulture, natural hair care, dance, creative arts and STEM activities.
Finally, The Chrysalis Program pairs mentees with successful women of color. Among our volunteers are medical doctors, therapist, attorneys and other successful business owners. REPRESENTATION MATTERS!
1. Our children need to see positive images of us in order to see positive images of themselves.
2. We understand childhood trauma affects self image, physical and mental health into adulthood. We wish to redirect our students into a positive direction with a greater perspective that leads to success
3. We need to change the narrative of minorities in America: How the media portrays us is NOT who we are as people. We need our students to see positive images that will give them greater heights to soar to.
